Things to do and see near Bellwood

 

Bellwood is ideally placed for those wishing to visit and explore the Wirral Peninsula, with plenty to do and see locally. The 400 acre Arrowe Park with its 18 hole golf course (150 acres) is less than a quarter of a mile away, there are plenty of scenic walks, toddler's play areas, pitch and putt, tennis, bowls and angling for you to enjoy. Some of the more unusual trees in its glorious woodland include Cedar of Lebanon, Maidenhair and Indian Bean Tree, Redwood amongst others.

The Wirral Peninsula is a leisure peninsula with many and varied activities including sailing at West Kirby, golf at the famous Royal Liverpool Golf Club (home to The Open Championships in 2006), cycling and walking along the Wirral Way. There is miles of glorious coastline ideal for long walks including a walk to Hilbre Island to see the seals and birds. Thurstaston Beach and Church is two miles away - St Bartholomews Church is burial place of Thomas Henry Ismay (owner of the famous White Star Line). Historic Parkgate is five miles away - the famous ice cream shop on the front is well worth a visit. The River Dee is home to many fascinating birds who come to nest on the marshes.


Ness Botanic Gardens (6 miles away) gifted to the University of Liverpool, is home to many rare and unusual plant species brought back from around the world beginning in the 19th Century by "great plant hunters" Geroge Forrest (Pieris formosa var. forrestii) and Isaac Kingdom Ward amongst others. Ness Gardens also offers spectacular rhododendron displays, camellias, a rock garden and the famous Laburnum Arch.


The village of Port Sunlight created by philanthropist and entrepreneur William Hesketh Lever includes Gladstone Hall, opened by William Gladstone in 1911, and is now the scene of plays and concerts. A visit to the Lady Lever Art Gallery is a must. Continuing the historical theme, the National Waterways Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port is a great day out.


The Blue Planet Aquarium offers a great opportunity to 'get close and personal' to a wide variety of marine animals - from sharks to otters, there is something for everyone.


New Brighton - with its views of Liverpool Bay and waterfront, Fort Perch Rock heritage and museum site and the newly refurbished Floral Pavilion Theatre. The Floral Pavilion is home to many and varied concerts, plays and performances.

Liverpool is just across the River Mersey and is accessible by road through the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels or by Mersey Ferry (Birkenhead or Seacombe to Liverpool) or underground train. At Seacombe you can find Spaceport and at Birkenhead you will find a museum dedicated to Submarines (U-Boat Story).

Liverpool - home to much more than the Liverpool One shopping complex and the Liver Bird -- with many museums including the International Slavery Museum and the National Conservation Centre. There is also the Beatles Museum and tours, city tours, the world famous Walker Art Gallery, TATE Liverpool and the wonderful architecture. We have three football teams locally - Tranmere Rovers (Wirral based) as well as Everton and Liverpool.


Chester - a visit to the Roman city of Chester (known to the Romans as Deva) with the most complete city walls in Britain, measuring nearly two miles, with its Roman amphitheatre (currently undergoing archaeological investigation) is a must. St Werburgh's Cathedral - formerly the Church of St Werburgh's Abbey is stunning and dates back to the Norman era. The Shropshire Union Canal runs through the city and Jacobean style 'rows' with shops on two levels are both interesting and varied. Chester Racecourse has horse racing meetings through the summer-time and Chester Zoo is home to over 7000 animals from 400+ species.
